Non-Surgical Hair Restoration
The non-surgical hair restoration options available at Hair Sciences Center of Colorado are typically the first treatment of choice for men and women with thinning hair in the early stages of baldness and hair loss. James Harris, M.D. may also recommend one of these treatments in conjunction with the FUE or FUS surgical hair restoration procedures for optimal results and maximum effectiveness. The primary non-surgical hair restoration methods that we offer are ACell, PRP Therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).
ACell and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) Combined
ACell Therapy is a treatment that helps to slow down the progression of hair loss while also helping patients re-grow their own hair. Doctor Harris combines ACell therapy with PRP for the best possible results. Medical doctors from a variety of specialties have used PRP for more than 20 years to encourage wound and tissue healing with the body’s own blood platelets. Many leading Hair Restoration specialists offer PRP Therapy in conjunction with other Surgical and Non-Surgical Hair Restoration treatments to promote healing and natural rejuvenation of the treatment areas.
ACell and PRP treatments often require several sessions that range in length from 30 to 90 minutes for maximum benefit. When you arrive at Hair Sciences Center for your appointment, James Harris, M.D. obtains a small blood sample from you. He then uses a centrifuge to separate whole blood products from the platelets. That is because human blood platelets are rich in growth factors that promote healing and regeneration when activated. The last step is for Doctor Harris to place the blood platelets into a syringe and inject them into your scalp. He numbs your scalp with anesthesia before doing this. You do not require sedation medication and can drive yourself home immediately after the procedure.
Not all patients are eligible to receive ACell/PRP. Doctor Harris must exclude those with a history of liver disease, skin disease, cancer, systemic or metabolic disorders, a platelet dysfunction syndrome, or who have undergone anti-coagulation therapy.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
LLLT involves wearing an advanced headpiece that emits low levels of therapeutic light onto your scalp. The process stimulates hair follicles exposed to the light. The device used by Doctor Harris is among the most powerful of its kind in the United States. You also have the option of wearing the device at home. The light it produces helps to halt hair loss by stimulating the production of protein in the hair cells and increasing metabolism.
If you choose to visit Hair Sciences Center of Colorado for LLLT, James Harris, M.D. recommends that you complete two or three 30-minute sessions per week for eight weeks. For best results, plan to follow this with a weekly treatment for 16 weeks and bi-monthly treatments for six months. Once you have completed this initial regimen, completing LLLT once every three months provides you with important maintenance. At-home therapy typically consists of two or three 20-minute sessions weekly for an indefinite time.
Some patients notice a reduction in their rate of hair loss after only four weeks, while others take up to 18 weeks. Between four and six months after treatment, the size of your hair follicles will increase to allow for fuller and thicker hair. Somewhere between six months and one year, you can expect the growth of healthy, natural hair.
