Surgical Hair Restoration
Greenwood Village Colorado Hair Restoration Doctor James Harris, M.D. offers both surgical and non-surgical hair restoration procedures at Hair Sciences Center of Colorado. The primary surgical treatment methods for hair restoration and transplant are the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUHT ) methods. The efficiency of each of these procedures improves dramatically when a Hair Restoration Doctor uses the ARTAS robot or the Harris Surgically Advanced Follicular Extraction (S.A.F.E.) System. Doctor Harris was the lead consulting doctor on the first system and patented the second system himself.
The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Procedure
Combined with either the ARTAS robot or the S.A.F.E. System, James Harris, M.D. uses FUE to extract several grafts of follicular units. Since the area he obtains follicles from is quite small, the procedure is non-invasive and leaves minimal scarring. After the extracted hairs grow back, the tiny circular scars are indistinguishable. With the S.A.F.E. System, Doctor Harris places a circular punch over each follicular unit to be removed.
The punch then separates the hair shafts from each unit. Next, the device grasps and extracts each follicular unit from the skin surrounding it. When Doctor Harris uses the ARTAS robot for FUE, he inputs the dissection parameters into the computer to program the robotic arm. It then identifies each area of extraction and completes the graft dissections.
FUE is most appropriate for those with male or female pattern baldness, thinning or missing eyebrows, high hairlines, or cosmetic surgery scars. It can even correct earlier hair transplants that no longer meet with your satisfaction.
The Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUHT) Procedure
With the Follicular Unit Hair Transplant method, James Harris, M.D. harvests follicular units from a non-balding area on the scalp and transfers them to the balding areas. After placing the patient under general anesthesia, he removes a strip of skin and then extracts the hair follicles using an operating microscope. Doctor Harris sutures the area where he removed skin, which leaves a small linear scar. Like the FUE method, new hair growth will eventually cover this completely. Lastly, Dr. Harris uses stereomicroscopic dissection to extract individual follicular unit grafts from the donor strip to be transplanted to the balding area.
The FUHT Surgical Hair Restoration method is also helpful to correct male or female pattern baldness, high hairlines, or previous hair transplants that are beginning to fail. Some patients prefer this procedure because it costs less and they prefer to have one linear scar rather than several tiny round ones. If you’re considering hair restoration surgery, Doctor Harris will let you know which of these procedures would work best for your particular situation.
Expectations of Both Surgeries
Whether Doctor Harris uses FUE or FUHT , some of the hair follicles that he transfers to your balding areas may fall out within a couple of weeks. However, don’t let this discourage you. The transplanted hairs must give way to make room for your natural new hair to grow. Approximately 90 days after the procedure, you will notice that your scalp is covered new hair growth throughout the donor area. Your new hair will thicken considerably over the next several months, with many patients achieving their desired hair fullness around six months after having FUE or FUHT . The new hair will be the same color and texture as your natural hair and will help to re-create your regular hairline as well.
